On Becoming a Psychologist

When I reflect on how I chose ‘psychologist’ for my career, I can see that I always had a natural curiously about people. I was fascinated what motivated them and what helped them change. The fascination deepened with time and I eventually made the decision to return to school. It took me a while to make that decision though.

I really didn’t want to go to school for such a long time. I took a detour to work as a court reporter but the desire to be a psychologist persisted.

I completed my Bachelor Degree in Psychology at Simon Fraser University. From there I went to the University of Alberta in Edmonton where I completed both my Master’s Degree and Ph.D.

I quickly became involved in research. Here is the research published in peer-reviewed journals:

Paulson, B. L., Everall, R. D., &, Stuart, J. (2001). Client perceptions of hindering experiences in counselling. Counselling and Psychotherapy Research, 1, 53-61.

Paulson, B., Truscott, D., & Stuart, J. (1999). Clients’ perception of helpful experiences in counselling. Journal of Counselling Psychology, 46(3), 317-324.

The latter has been cited in other academic papers. There’s a full list of my Publications & Presentations here.

I was invited to hold an academic appointment with the University of Saskatchewan, which I declined in order to return to Vancouver and build my career.

My research taught me a lot about working with clients. It focused on the psycho-therapeutic process, the role of emotions in therapy, and mind-body interactions. I didn’t know how applicable it would be in my future practice.

In the early part of my career I worked as a Psychologist for the Ministry of Children and Families. In addition to treating youth with a variety of mental health disorders including depression, anxiety, trauma and psychotic disorders, I worked as a liaison to Surrey Memorial Hospital and Peace Arch Hospital.

When it was time for a change I accepted an appointment with Simon Fraser University in Health and Counseling Services. In addition to my role as a treating Psychologist I supervised counselling practicum students and doctoral psychology interns.

Today my time is divided between my private practice and my role as the Director of Training for the Counseling Department at Adler University in downtown Vancouver.

I am also a member of two study groups that keep me challenged and excited about what’s new in my field.
