After I began my career as an adult it took me a few years to figure out that I love working with people in a way that helps them overcome obstacles and fulfill unmet dreams. I knew early on this is what I wanted to do.
I really didn’t want to go to school for such a long time. So I took a detour and worked as a court reporter. The desire to be a psychologist didn’t go away…
I went back to school. I completed my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at Simon Fraser University. From there I went to the University of Alberta in Edmonton to do my Masters Degree and Ph.D. I only applied to one graduate program.
People told me I was crazy to only apply to one program. But I just knew this was where I needed to be.
My research taught me a lot about working with clients. It focused on the psychotherapeutic process, the role of emotions in therapy, and mind-body interactions. I didn’t know how applicable it would be in my future practice.
From there I went on to work at university counselling centers, non-profit counselling agencies, community mental health clinics, and hospitals. I taught at the university graduate level. And then it was time for me to develop my own practice.
Now, despite the detours, I get to do what I love to do.
I am a member of two study groups that keep me challenged and excited about what’s new in my field.
And, voila…here’s my current list of professional affiliations.
